Info concerning africans in asia has always been hard to come by as few wish to let it be known that there are indeed africans in asia! and if there are, the criminal minds of the few among the many are used to taint the reputations of the africans that are indeed succeeding and involving themselves in asian life. unlike japan where so many africans and indeed foreigners in general get by with only English and do little to engage with the population besides midnight intercourse, in china, this is quite hard as the society has not tried to be easier for foreigners. hence it is quite important to show from the start in china a will to survive and thrive.

as is already known, life goes on. it`s already 5 days after the quake but doesn`t seem to be getting any better in general. people are still determined to get back to some sort of normalcy but it`s difficult with the government being the natural asses that they are. tokyo wasn`t so badly hit . however the effects of the quake are visible on tv, with no energy in various parts of the city and victims up north who are paralyzed by the gov`t`s inability to do simple things like evacuate the people there and send necessary supplies. over 15 governments from around the world have pledged to help japan in any way they can and still the gov`t isn`t using the necessary resources to solve the problems and allow people who lost their homes to go on.

finally. something live and fresh. for archives sake, here is a complete performance of LA BRUHA LA NEGRA in shibuya, japan from a place called the seco bar. they decided by the intervention of a trusted associate to take one of their usually mind- numbing dance nights and give it over to a more eclectic night. i fear saying "experimental" cause it was never their intention. for the first time in my career at that point, i actually played to a room of people. about over 30 if i remember. of course they weren't there to see me. regardless they did and kindly suffered through it. i was thrilled. the ceiling of this underground place was high and had a lot of metal venting which thanks to me rattled incredibly violently. don't think you can pick it up in the video but it's worth a try. i'm sure some were scared. by the way, the VJ work in the back of me is NOT mine. the colors i kinda liked but the fuckin drawing was by an idiot. she's also a highly requested popular idiot in the tokyo VJ scene so take that as it is.

for those not in the know, japan basically shuts down at the end of the year and just so that everyone can embrace and feel joyous of that fact, the days leading up to the end of the month and year are pure hell for most people with deadlines or myself numerous "obligations" to fulfill. sorry for no more detail. from the 29th though we can now rest our heads, relax and for the music minded, get down to a lot of good fucking concerts and dance nights. some i will attend and others just wish for. but here for tonight is the BLACKSMOKER crew giving up a big finale at CLUB ASIA in shibuya for the regular event EL NINO. it stands to be a killer. lookin forward to it though not lookin forward to comin home at the crack of dawn smelling like fuckin smoke.

yes, i'm back and of course it has been too long but i'm gonna make up for it with a lot of good shit. so for the time being here are some of my preoccupations. glancing through a DAZED AND CONFUSED from a month or 2 ago, i saw some lovely pictures of a black woman. the pictures so dazzling i had to do more research on this woman.

so now I know that she was an avant garde heroine as well as a body discarded to the 70's never to mature. though her politics are somewhat understandable in someways and offensive to black people in other ways, it was a the way then. except that for her, the idea of being multiracial and not black as it was defined then meant having to decide black or not.

Unfair.

especially now but that was a different time and to be black was a clear curse or show of strength. some would say it is the same now but frankly it isn't. and that goes beyond just obama.

having looked at as many pictures as I can, i can somewhat bet that she felt radical and in the fashion world that meant being around almost solely white americans and white europeans. that was the world then. she would be shaken now though. of course many of the major publications are still focused on white models,etc. still how long can that last. just the other night, mrs obama chose an indian american designer. as the numbers different from the "norm" grow in influence so the old mantle will fall.

regardless of all that talk, it should be known that donyale was a soldier and she fought hard by creating.....she was one of the many black radicals of that time. though she is gone, the photos can still show us now what it also meant then.

I only spent at the most 5 months I guess about working on this but it's thick. only 2 or 3 songs are under 5 minutes. it became such a beast that it is now officially 2 cds. couldn't help it. next on the event list is a different and very exhilarating affair. The first event was more aquatic and calm. this time with drums involved, the manic level rose a bit. major vibes in the area. it's nice to see this type of performance NOT in a dingy tokyo club. everyone's reaction to the music reflects so. there were unfortunately some sound problems for eye as he didn't have a sound man helping out. but naturally an improviser, he stayed steady. outside of the boredoms, eye has kept quite quiet on the performance scene since 2003 only doing art and dj work. here is to hopefully more collaborations. this is one of 2 or 3 posts. I am quite excited about this as the first CD is close to completion. It will be 10 tracks and quite intense. My hope is that people can listen to it from start to finish and here that there is a sonic story. No words but there is something there. There is no label at this time but I hope that people will listen to DESI LA's myspace which is below and also download the free track (not on the CD), made especially for the internet. GROUND ZERO - 1998 (otomo yoshihide)

otomo yoshihide, the noise musician extradonaire is approaching or already has turned 50. Hence this year is packed with Otomo events and exhibitions throughout tokyo and of course other parts of japan. Just to think that Otomo, noise musician has become a fixture of society would have been unthinkable over 10 years ago. Of course ground zero, his main band at that time (1998) had achieved a certain amount of fame per se and toured through europe and america. since then partly due to dedication, connections, musical variation, etc. he has achieved the type of noteriety that many wish they had. Like his contemporary, Otomo has a zillion musicians at his disposal to achieve various projects and he also NHK support to make one of his cash cows, soundtracks. Otomo originally started working internationally producing the phenominal soundtrack for THE BLUE KITE. This was a chinese film and at that time, he was very concerned with collaborating with other asian musicians. Those times died after ground zero's dissolvement but luckily have become once again important with his recent ASIAN MEETINGS.

Otomo's new jazz orchestra is by far (outside of his soundtracks), his most famous and lucrative pursuit (it does help to have star KAHIMI KARII in the band) but in my heart, this band has the power to send you to jazz god but also drive you to the door. The first 2 times I saw the band, I was enthralled. The last time which was last year, was absolutely horrible. The room was totally packed with adoring fans but the only thing I wanted to do was leave. Otomo's music spoke to me in the past and I bought EVERYTHING with his name on it no matter how shitty. After coming to japan however with his change in music toward silence, though I still support him, there are often several concerts where I ask, what the hell are you doing?

Otomo's greatest gift is not as a guitarist which is his most often used instrument recently but his arrangement and people skills. Trust me, if I played my guitar with feedback for an hour, not one person would come to see me. When Otomo does not touch a conventional instrument, his true powers arise. This past year, Otomo provided the live solo soundtrack to an experimental movie. The movie was shit but the soundtrack was heavenly!! It is only these times when I can remember why I love him. So here is a treasure to celebrate the good from the bad. I don't believe in telling a musician that everything they do is good. Criticism is sometimes necessary. Regardless, though to my knowledge this CD is not in print, it is one of the most important CD's he has ever produced. Sorry for it being separated. EYE magic (EXHIBITION!!2009) and BOREDOMS rumours and tremorss

here is in celebration of EYE's recent exhibition now on display until july 12. Being held in NADIFF/MAGIC ROOM in Ebisu tokyo, there is the basement floor which houses EYE's painted on jackets of various kinds as well as an unreleased CD remix. Once the exhibition is over, I will be posting my own purchases from there. It's a very fun atmosphere. EYE's other work with MAGIC ROOM is definitely his best yet and two photos below from the NADIFF website show some of his words. I didn't take pics myself but if I get a chance to, I will.

As well there are many interesting BOREDOMS photos on the net so I thought I would also post some of them as the boredoms are getting set for several special concerts. First up is the LUNAR ECLIPSE show which will take place on a boat near okinawa I believe. Yes, the VOORDOMS on a boat BUT it is incredibly expensive and only those who are not affected by the recession can go I think. It is actually much cheaper for me to go to the following NYC show of BOADRUM on sept 9th. There seem to be other shows around the same time by the boredems at ATP?? and a university but I can only confirm the NYC show as definite.

the knitting factory in SOHO kicked off a kickass festival unfortunately slightly unpromoted but still with great intention. I'm not sure is NYker's are tired of afrobeat signs but regardless if they can shake their ass they shouldn't be. Cause straight up all of the indie shit permeating through brooklyn does stink to high heaven and a little soul or a shake never hurt a soul. Though the festival started on JUNE 2nd (i was unable to attend), some of the more forceful acts were not in attendence: them being ANTIBALAS and AKOYA. Both amazing groups in their own right. I actually received a flyer promoting Antibalas AFTER!! the festival. AnyWAY..... the one night i was able to attend was the last night properly ended with FEMI KUTI. Here he is.

I'm very much in love with film, filmmaking and filmviewing. When i first came to tokyo, i was frustrated by not being able to understand any of the movies due to my lack of linguistic ability. Now that I am fluent, I have no interest in watching Japanese movies. How ironic. Because of work and other obligations as well as interferences, I don't watch as many movies as I want. Also watching movies at home is just not so much fun. There is also no one to talk to about different types of movies available. Luckily seeing this as well as other films recently has renewed some of my faith in the actual experience of watching, enjoying as well as supporting film. These pics were taken while trying to find the knitting factory in SOHO. I happened upon a film set but it was just a video prod. for a south american band. Another guy watching said there were a lot of NICE women there. Of course I arrive after that. Anyway the pics show film is alive.

part of the life of the city is the musicians that play for free but ask for donations:busking. In tokyo, too many musicians labor in obscurity having to conform to the invitation-- invite friends so that you can pay the base pay of a club. no one comes and you pay from your pocket. The actual love of hearing, listening and enjoying music is quite changed. So it is with great relief that music can be free and supported directly by the public. Here I came across AFRO-ANDES, a nice band playing at penn station on this day.

the boredoms, an eternal force of nature with each new activity are quite porely documented. I am quite angry at the avant-gardes resistance to good documentation of their activities. I only wish I had been more aggressive about documentation when in the early 2000's the boredoms had a secondary group called 7vo7. In actuality, it was the boredoms with a different name but the same intensity. Fantastic music. To make up for this error, I later documented all of the concerts I went to as much as I could. Hence this gem. Done at the new liquid room in EBISU, TOKYO and starting with AEO and then moving on to the boredoms. It's a perfect companion to their DVD sunflandisco. For those familiar with this era of performance, pay special attention to the end, when they jam! the boredoms sometimes DO do encores of slightly different music so catch that. Be aware that the SUPERROOTS 9 live CD is in fact: INCOMPLETE as the boredoms went back on stage for a little more jamming and then segued into EYE doing a dj set. I was probably one of the few non-japanese in the audience. For note, that event was a huge venue on christmas especially rented by the boredoms. there was another room for a different DJ and it was not a concert but really an EVENT. I do believe though that attendance was not high enough and they may have lost money. They haven't done such a ONLY boredoms concert since in tokyo. Since then venues such as the liquid room or festivals have been prefered. I do hope they do this again though. a genius and his treasure - MYTH OF TOMORROW by Okamoto Taro

The history of this painting is quite amazing but I will let people discover the finer details of this by themselves. To put the history of this painting simply, Okamoto went to mexico to make this painting and it was given to a place or hotel(not sure about the specifics myself). Regardless it was scheduled to be put on display in mexico some time in the 60's I believe. From there the history gets strange for such a humongous painting as the actual painting got lost. Over 30 years later, Okamoto's wife went about trying to finally recover the painting. She did not do this alone but with the help of a great many others. Again whether she found it or it was found after her death I am not sure but it was found and it was found quite damaged and partially in pieces. Since then some of the best restorers of artwork helped put the piece back to together piece by piece and then sent it back to it's homeland, japan.

After hearing about this piece it was with great relief that I was finally able to see it in Tokyo over 1 year ago.

Let me explain 2 things. First who is okamomo? Okamoto Taro is actually one of the best artists in Japan and one of it's most famous but for some strange reason, quite unknown out side of japan. In the 60's, Okamoto had the friendship and adoration of Picasso (okamoto wrote a book about this relationship to Picasso) and was equally loved in japan. He already has TWO museums dedicated to him. Okamoto, for those who remember or have seen, is the man responsible for the monument made for the OSAKA WORLD FAIR in the 60's that opened Japan to the world and established japan as an equal country.

Second, MYTH OF TOMORROW (shinwa no ashita) is indeed a HUGE work. Most graffiti artists would drool to do something this big. The pic i've included is of only one or two panels. Altogether I believe there are maybe 10 panels. Though the scars can be seen, the work is awe-inspiring. The work originally shown only in a museum is now on display for free in SHIBUYA, one of the youth centers of Tokyo. I've visited this walking area many times so it was with great surprise that the owners of this space won the right to present the work. This is especially surprising as japan has much graffiti but most of it of course illegal and in unseen places. This massive work was of a visionary who deeply disliked the anti -art attitude which was and is still now common throughout the country. Though public sculptures can be found, actually paintings on a massive scale are rare. Though japan produces truly great art, the society is quite ANTI-ART. Art is not bought or seen on a massive scale. The common idea of a mural though popular around the world and also in japan in the 60's has died a death only to be replayed by lawless graffiti that can also be replaced anytime by white paint.

Plainly speaking, the work is great and for any person who ever has the chance they should experience it.
